Cost-Effective & Accessible Building Solutions

Smart design • Innovation • Longevity & buildability

Creating sustainable, high-quality homes should not be out of reach.

Our approach to affordability focuses on smart design, informed material choices and innovative building systems that reduce complexity, increase longevity and empower people to participate in the building process.

Affordability through Design, not Compromise

Cost-effective buildings are not achieved by cutting corners, but through thoughtful design that reduces unnecessary complexity, improves efficiency and prioritises long-term value.

By integrating passive solar principles, efficient layouts and appropriate material systems, we help reduce both upfront construction costs and ongoing operational expenses.

Cost-conscious design outcomes:

  • Reduced reliance on mechanical systems
  • Efficient use of materials and structure
  • Simplified construction where possible
  • Lower long-term running and maintenance costs

Longevity & Life-Cycle Value

Affordability must be considered over the full life of a building.

Natural materials and well-considered building systems often offer exceptional longevity, ageing gracefully and requiring fewer replacements over time. This life-cycle approach reduces long-term costs while improving environmental outcomes.

Longevity benefits:

  • Durable materials with long service lives
  • Reduced maintenance and replacement costs
  • Buildings that adapt over time
  • Better long-term value for occupants

Owner-Builder & Community-Led Building

We have extensive experience working with owner-builders, community builds and participatory construction models.

By facilitating workshops and hands-on building processes, we support people to actively engage in the construction of their homes — reducing costs, building skills and strengthening community connections.

Benefits of participatory building:

  • Reduced labour costs
  • Skill sharing and empowerment
  • Stronger connection to home and place
  • Increased wellbeing through collaboration

FAST SLOW: A Practical Innovation in Natural Building

One example of our innovation-focused approach is the FAST SLOW building system, developed through Mudtec in collaboration with the University of Newcastle.

FAST SLOW is a DIY-friendly, eco-ply structural framing system that simplifies the construction of floors, walls and roofs — allowing builders to assemble the structure quickly, then slow down to infill with natural materials such as earth, straw or hemp.

The FAST SLOW concept:

  • FAST: Streamlined, easy-to-assemble structural frames
  • SLOW: Time to infill with bio-based materials and complete interiors thoughtfully.

The aim is to reduce construction stress, simplify approvals and make natural building systems more affordable and accessible, while supporting both builder and occupant wellbeing.

Making Natural Building more Accessible

Through innovation, education and system-based design, we are committed to expanding access to natural building — not just for niche projects, but for broader housing needs.

By combining efficient building systems with flexible natural material infill, we help create pathways toward more affordable, resilient and people-centred housing.
